okay so, as of chapter 3 there's a segment that might lend credence to my theory in some way or another. i've spoilered it, please don't read unless you've seen the demon path of chapter 3! when you take the demon path, you enter an ink-filled room with a single audio log in it. for the first time, we hear from Joey himself.
he says the following: "There's nothing wrong with dreaming. Wishing for the impossible is just human nature. That's how I got started. Just a pencil and a dream. We all want everything without even having to lift a finger. They say you just have to believe.
Belief can make you succeed. Belief can make you rich. Belief can make you powerful.
Why with enough belief, you can even cheat death itself.
Now that... is a beautiful, and a positively silly thought."
it's hard to convey through text, but the way he talks during this audio log is interesting to me. he talks with nonchalance up until the "cheat death" part, where he starts to sound really into what he's saying. when he says it's a "positively silly thought", he sounds almost wistful. he sounds both like he's laughing at the idea, but secretly believes in it.
my guess, is his true motive in everything is cheating death. what if my theories of him having an illness are true... except, he never recovered, and doesn't have long to live at this point in time? so basically everything is the same, except his goal is not specifically for a new body, but to not die from his illness.
i feel like it'd be strange to talk about cheating death as Joey doesn't seem to be THAT old. maybe in his 30s at the time of recording the audio log. the average life expectancy in 1920 - 1940 was about 50-60 years, but that's still a good amount before you'd start thinking about cheating death. especially how jovial Joey sounds, it doesn't seem like something that would bother him unless his life expectancy had been considerably shortened.
again, it's just an idea! but to me, this audio log definitely points out that there's something wrong with Joey that he sought to rectify. with the other clues (detailed in my previous posts)... it seems likely, in my opinion.
